These adapters were used in the commercial truck applications for 545 to the 2550 series Allisons with the round bellhousing behind Cummins engines up to ’02. They are pretty thick, require a commercial starter (a ’89-’93 Dodge Cummins starter may also work if you have room for the larger starter motor) and could have a weak flexplate adapter if you run more than 300 hp. Be advised there were a few SAE 2 versions of these – so it would be easy to end up with a mismatch if a person was unaware of that. The SAE 3 has a 16.88″ 12 bolt circle, where the SAE 2 12 bolt circle is 18.38″.

Due to a different bolt pattern and the required cam journal seal, these types of adapters will not work on ’03 + 5.9 or 6.7 Commonrail Cummins engines.  The commercial engines in these years typically have the SAE 3 connection for the trans but have a rear gear train for the CP3 pump and accessories, which will not interchange to a Dodge engine.

One of the things I like about the SAE housings is the cooler connections are on the bottom of the bellhousing, so they don’t get tangled up with your exhaust.

There are both passenger and driver side starter options with the engine adapters, with the driver side starter version being a bit more difficult to find, so be aware of that.
